Hoi An, also Faifoo, is a city of Vietnam, on the coast of the East Sea in the South Central Coast region of Vietnam. Hoi An Ancient Town is an exceptionally well-preserved example of a South-East Asian trading port dating from the 15th to the 19th century. Its buildings and its street plan reflect the influences, both indigenous and foreign, that have combined to produce this unique heritage site. (Wikipedia)
I took a bicycle ride and then walked down the old town in Hoi An and met some interesting people.
Hearing a song playing from a distance, I walked to a window, I found myself watching an old traditional dance in the Old Town of Hoi An.
This is Loan Ly, No 5.
She has been a tailor for 20 years and has a shop nearby, she came up to me wanting me to follow her to her shop. “Sorry I stop wearing suits long ago”.
This is Tung, also known as super mom, she is now 68 and has this drink stall for almost 41 years. Her daughter told me that.
This is Cam Thuy, daughter to Tung. A tailor here. She then took me to her shop too. I just followed, like the waves of the wind. Finally I got convinced.
I later met Kim and Cam Thuy, at their fashion shop called Kim Only. Tran Thi Kim Trang is 40 and has 2 kids aged 19 and 21. Her younger sister Cam Thuy is 35 and has 2 kids aged 10 and 6 years old.
“I got divorced 10 years ago, he use to beat beat me”. I figured he was abusive.
“Every day she either laughs or cries (but most days, both). Sometimes she happily tends to the plants and the animals, humming along and talking to herself, but other days she sobs and bangs at the gate trying to get out. She has dementia, so she has to stay in the family home all day.
She never remembers that I don’t understand her words, but because of that it means that I get to understand all that is beneath the words. I hold her hand through the gate when she’s in tears, and sometimes she gives me flowers. She’s lived through the Vietnam war and who knows what else, I don’t know her name, but that doesn’t stop her from putting a smile on my face.” – Alannah McLaughlin
