Starting A Refugee Learning Centre in Langkawi

Starting A Refugee Learning Centre in Langkawi

It’s been close to one year since I’ve been in Langkawi Island, while exploring the beautiful island, I learned about the Rohingya refugees living here.

It was a surprise at first, there are refugees in Langkawi? Also curious to know more as I wished to photograph their lives here. This led me to meet Arfatkhan who started a small learning centre, since the pandemic.

In Malaysia, refugee children are not given a formal education in school due to their status. Their parent had to leave their homes in Myanmar due to the crisis there.

The next weeks, I kept thinking about them while I looked at the images, not sure how but I felt like getting more involved with the kids and their education. I then met up with Arfat again to discuss what we can do together.

Today, few months have passed and we have a new learning centre!

The project Children Of Rohingya was born, we found a new building, a much bigger clean space, we had the local community support us to get it started, we received new tables and chairs, school supplies, some amazing volunteers who come weekly, we teach English and Arts, Math and are creating more activities for these amazing children.

Sustaining a refugee learning centre, on a grassroots level isn’t always easy, it comes with it’s own unexpected challenges. Mainly with fundings, as it takes money to pay rent, student supplies, running the kitchen, workbooks and running expenses.

We are now in need of support and awareness, to keep educating these children, so we have a new crowdfunding campaign!

I truly hope you will take some time, read about our project and empower us! I hope you contribute a little, any amount is truly appreciated, SHARE this out to friends and help us reach the goal!

Ways To Support

This can only happen with your support and actions, as the paper currency converts to a bigger purpose when used to empower these marginalised communities and the awareness keeps their stories alive.
