Schmieman Family Volunteers in Papaya Academy

Schmieman Family Volunteers in Papaya Academy

Last July 2014, I had a chance to spend my days with the Schmieman family here at Papaya Academy in Manila. Papaya Academy is a volunteer school managed by the Dutch organization called Kalinga. They give free education to the poor children here who are mainly from the Payatas Dumpsite.

It was amazing to see how a family comes together for the purpose of volunteering and helping the children of the Payatas Dumpsite. Spending some time together with them made me see that a family can make so much of a difference and create amazing experiences together.

The Schmieman’s are from Holland and had planned a 3 weeks holiday vacation in Philippines but via the suggestions of their children they decided to start their holiday by coming to a volunteer school, raising funds to donate items for the children and living among them.

With donations raised from work colleagues and friends back home, they stayed in the school with us, purchase daily used items (like a fridge), sports items and so many more things for the students and the school. Johan, Sylvia, Timo, Anne and the youngest Michelle lived and slept in the school library, not worrying about the comforts of a vacation, spending their days with the students, teaching and guiding them with games, classes and activities.

I felt lucky to have met and known them, the Papaya children loved every moment with them, the teachers made them as part of their own family and they had create their own magical world here. It was a fulfilling experience for me to be part of and knowing that there is so much more a family can do as a unit. This was the first time I have ever met a family like this. I hope someday I would have my own family… Like the Schmieman’s.

“Life is about showing love, kindness and making a difference for strangers or yourself. It more about being present and knowing who you truly are. It’s not about a religion, a race or a color or what will you get out it. Life is just that simple.”

Johan, Sylvia, Timo, Anne and Michelle this album is dedicated to all the amazing memories you created for Papaya. We will miss you. Love and Light! – Kiran Kreer

Moments like this we realise that connecting with another takes a second. But it stays with you for a lifetime.
