“So what are you doing here?”
“I’m building metal support beams for this house since the earthquake destroyed partial of it.”
“But it’s three storey high, can it support the whole house?”
“Oh yes for sure, my boss has given it a guarantee.”
“A guarantee? Hmm what’s the percentage then?”
“Err no no for sure it will hold, don’t worry, I give it 80% guarantee. It will surely hold.” – he smiled arrogantly when saying this as though he just pulled the numbers out from thin air.
“Ah okay, so how about the top portion of the house? What happens when there is another strong aftershock?”
“That’s why we need metal beams down here, the family can run down here and be safe. They can hide under this metal beam, you see it’s very strong as I put it with my own hands. You see this one behind me? I put this here.” – smiling very proudly
“So how old are you?”
“I’m 16 or 17 sir ji.”
“Aren’t you suppose to be in school?”
“Yes but there is no school now, so I work here, my family needs the money now.”
“So what’s the cost of building and renovating this house?”
“In total my boss charge 8 lakhs (US$7,800).”
“And how much do you earn a day?”
“I earn 85 rupees (US$0.80).”
