Children Wanting Solar Lights For Reading | Nepal Earthquake

We did a one day social project by walking around with bags full of solar lights and handed them out to those elderly and mother with babies. We went to an emergency camp site in Kathmandu where thousands of earthquake victims are still living in tents. Many of them who are homeless.

We only had 100 Nokero solar lights to give out to those living with no electricity and we had to choose from a thousand families living there. It was not easy as we did not have enough lights. This is where I met this amazing boy.

This young boy saw us giving the lights out, stopped playing and came running to me!

“Brother.. brother please give me one too.”
“We don’t have enough, let me give to the elderly first. I have only a few left.”
“No we really need it too, it’s for me and my younger siblings, we all need it to read and study at night. Please brother help us too..please.”

This went on for awhile. I was so impressed by his persistence that I follow him back to his tent aka shelter.

“Are you sure you are going to use it? What do you use now?”
“We only have candles and a torch, my mother needs the light for cooking. But we can’t read with candles, and isn’t this for reading too? And I promise we will all share it.”
“Haha you are very smart, yes it is.”

He then brought all his siblings into the tent, opened up their school bags and showed me his books. They even pretended to read to show me how they will use the solar light.

How could I say no to them…. luckily I had one last light with me and today he is the new owner of it.”

We need more solar lights for over 200 children here at the tent city in Kathmandu. Wouldn’t it be amazing if all of this kids had their own solar light for reading?

Only if we have more purchasing/donating this lights for these children, they would have a bright light to read every night. A light for their education.
